It happened at about 5 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, on I-384 eastbound in Hartford County, according to Connecticut State Police.
A driver lost control of the vehicle near Exit 2 in Manchester and traveled from the right side of the highway to the left, police said.
The vehicle traveled onto the median and struck a tree, coming to an uncontrolled stop in two pieces on the median, authorities said.
Police said the driver and front-right adult passenger were hospitalized with suspected serious injuries.
A passenger in the rear of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, State Police said.
The deceased passenger's identity has not been confirmed, police said.
